This article is perhaps a prophetic and fitting conclusion to MARHedge’s time on Earth. Prophetic, because it portends a world where artificial walls between “hedge funds” and “traditional funds” no longer exist; and fitting because – in a sense – MARHedge’s raison d’etre (“to recognize the importance of alternative investments”) has come to pass. To a great extent, the investment community now recognizes the importance of alternative investments. In fact, as this article illustrates, alternative investments have now become truly mainstream.
The article is about a new report by research firm Tower Group (reviewed below). Says MARHedge:
“(Report author Matthew) Nelson writes that long-only mandates are becoming obsolete and that alternative portfolio strategies are the wave of the future.”
When it comes to portable alpha, the report contends that:
“44% of institutions aren’t currently using portable alpha, but are considering using it in the future; this means there is approximately another $2 trillion sitting on the sidelines ready to be invested in the strategy.”
This report looked interesting enough that Alpha Male tracked down the author and reviewed the report himself. All About Alpha’s own take follows in the next posting.
